ISTANBUL, Turkey — A 38-year-old British man, Martyn Latchman, tragically passed away in late July 2025 while preparing for his second hair transplant at the renowned Dr. Cinik clinic in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district.

According to official statements, Latchman became unexpectedly ill during the pre-operative phase—before the procedure had even begun. Despite undergoing all required medical tests (blood work, chest X-ray, ECG) and receiving clearance for surgery, he fell critically ill and was rushed to a nearby hospital’s intensive care unit, but could not be saved.

The incident has triggered a formal investigation by Turkish health and judicial authorities. Clinic staff including the surgeon and anesthesiologist have been questioned, and Latchman’s body was sent to Turkey’s forensic institute for autopsy before being repatriated to the UK. The clinic has submitted all relevant medical documentation and stated it’s deeply saddened by the outcome.

This tragedy raises urgent questions about patient safety and regulation in Turkey’s booming medical tourism sector. With over one million cosmetic procedures performed annually—and hair transplants accounting for roughly 60% of the global market in Turkey—the incident underscores the need for stricter oversight amid rapid industry growth.
