Phyllis Zaballero: Landscapes of the Mind — A Spotlight at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Manila

Phyllis Zaballero presents her 44th solo exhibition, Landscapes of the Mind, at Gallery XVII on the museum's third floor. This exhibition marks her first at the National Museum of the Philippines and features 19 abstract works from the 1970s to the 1990s. The pieces delve into themes of memory and emotion, with notable works like Acquainted with Lightning (1990), inspired by Marjorie Evasco’s poem of the same name, and selections from her black-and-white series, including Carouge Triptych I (1978) and Nimbus V (1980)

A Celebration of Color, Memory, and Abstraction

A Celebration of Color, Memory, and Abstraction

Zaballero, known for her masterful use of abstraction and color, brings forth a collection that bridges personal reflection with collective identity. The exhibit features a curated selection of her works, including both recent pieces and seminal paintings that trace her creative journey from the 1970s to the present. Each canvas speaks with its own rhythm — from subtle tones evoking nostalgia to vibrant geometries that challenge perception.

This showcase not only honors Zaballero’s legacy but also situates her work within the larger narrative of post-war Philippine modernism. As one of the few female artists of her generation to receive both local and international acclaim, her voice resonates in today’s global discourse on gender, memory, and cultural preservation.

The exhibit is part of the National Museum’s ongoing mission to celebrate Filipino excellence in the arts. Installed in the Silangan Hall, the space is thoughtfully curated to reflect the depth and layers of Zaballero’s mindscapes.
