Google has just released Chrome 138 (v138.0.7204.49/50), packed with AI-powered enhancements, cross-device tab group sync, OCR PDF features, and important security upgrades. Let’s dive into what’s new 👇

1. AI Features Go Deeper (Gemini Required)

Chrome’s built-in Gemini AI integration now powers several helpful tools:

  • Summarizer API: Quickly condense long articles.

  • Language Detector API: Detects text language automatically.

  • Translator API: Offers fast translations within the browser.

  • Prompt API for Extensions: Lets third-party extensions tap into Gemini’s AI capabilities.


2. Tab Group Sync Between Desktop & Mobile

A major win for multitaskers: Tab groups—including group names and colored tabs—now sync across devices. Start work on your desktop, continue on your phone seamlessly .


3. OCR Support for Scanned PDFs

Chrome can now OCR scanned PDF text, making it selectable and searchable. Handy for research and document management .


4. Enhanced Safe Browsing Sync

When you opt into Enhanced Safe Browsing, that protection will sync automatically across all your Chrome-signed devices—desktop, mobile, and more.


5. DevTools AI Assist & WebGPU Enhancements

Developers get an AI-powered DevTools insights panel for console warnings, CSS tips, and network debugging. Plus, WebGPU support offers performance boosts for graphics-heavy web apps.


6. Security Fixes & Support Updates

Eleven security vulnerabilities were patched (none exploited in the wild), including one medium-risk animation flaw. Plus, Chrome 138 is the last version to support macOS 11; macOS 12+ is required for future updates.
